Explanations pitched at you

In this lesson you will:

  • Request explanations anchored to knowledge you already have
  • Test an analogy for where it stops being true

The most common learning prompt is “explain X simply”, and it is a weak request. Simple for whom?

You get a generic beginner explanation, pitched at nobody, disconnected from everything you already know.

Anchor it to what you have

New understanding attaches to existing understanding. So supply the anchor:

Explain [thing]. I already understand [related things]. I do not know [gap]. Build from what I know rather than starting from scratch.

The difference is substantial. An explanation of neural networks for someone who knows statistics should not begin where one for someone who knows carpentry begins, and “explain simply” gets you neither.

This is E3·L3’s rule — context beats cleverness — pointed at your own head.

State the confusion, not the topic

Better still, when you can locate it:

I understand [A] and I understand [B]. What I cannot see is how [A] leads to [B].

That gets a targeted answer instead of a lecture containing your answer somewhere. It also forces you to articulate the gap, which occasionally dissolves it before you press send.

Analogies, and their edges

Analogies are how most difficult ideas become graspable, and they are where misconceptions come from. Every analogy is wrong somewhere; the trouble starts when you do not know where.

So always ask:

Give me an analogy. Then tell me exactly where the analogy breaks down and what it would mislead me about.

The second half is the valuable half. “A neural network is like a brain” is useful for thirty seconds and then actively harmful — and knowing the boundary is what stops the analogy calcifying into a belief.

Ask for it twice, differently

A strong technique that costs one extra request:

Now explain the same idea a completely different way, without reusing the earlier analogy.

If both explanations make sense to you and you can see they describe the same thing, you have understood the idea. If only one landed, you memorised a phrasing.

This also protects against a single misleading framing, since the second attempt rarely shares the first one’s blind spot.

Ask what you should have asked

The question learners cannot ask, because it requires knowing the shape of the subject:

What question about this should I be asking that I have not?

What do beginners usually misunderstand here?

What will trip me up later if I accept this simplified version now?

That last one is particularly good. Introductory explanations lie a little by necessity, and knowing which simplification you have accepted is the difference between a foundation and a future problem.

Keep the level honest

If an explanation is not landing, say so specifically rather than asking for “simpler” again — which usually just produces shorter.

I lost you at [exact point]. Explain that step only, in more detail.

Zooming in on the break beats restarting the whole thing at a lower level, and it keeps you at a level that is still worth learning at.

Say what you already know and where exactly the gap is, rather than asking for simple. Demand the edge of every analogy, because that edge is where misconceptions live. Ask for the same idea a second way to check you have the idea rather than a phrasing.
